Family of Origin: Chao was born in Laos in November 1968. His parents are Chia Pao Xiong and Shoua Yang. He has six older brothers and three younger brothers. His older brothers are Waneng, Chue (deceased), Chong Koua, Saidang, Yong Yia, and Kao (deceased). His younger brothers are Bee, Thai (deceased), and Ger (deceased). He has two sisters—Mai Xia and Ying. Chao and his parents left Laos to Thailand in February 1982 due to the Secret War in Laos. They emigrated to the USA in February 1985 and lived in Rice Lake, Wisconsin until July 1987, then moved to Eau Claire, Wisconsin. They have been living in Eau Claire since 1987. Chao’s father, Chia Pao, passed away in April 1989. Chao’s great, great grand-father emigrated from China to Laos many years ago.
Education: Chao graduated from Memorial High School in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, in June 1989. Following his high school graduation, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, Wisconsin from September 1989 to May 1996. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Technology with a concentration on Manufacturing Engineering in December 1993 and a Master of Science Degree in Vocational Rehabilitation in May 1996.
Family: Chao has been married to May Thao Lor since December 1993. They have three sons and a daughter. Their sons are Shao (2/1995), Hmong (1/1997), Longmay (6/2002) and their daughter is Pa Zong (11/1999).
Work History: From May 1996 to August 1997, Chao worked as a Vocational Evaluator/Case Manager at Headwaters, Inc. in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. From September 1997 to October 2018, he worked as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the State of Wisconsin, Department of Workforce Development, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. He has been employed by the Eau Claire Area Hmong Mutual Assistance Association , Inc. (ECAHMAA) since October 2, 2018.
Chao’s wife, May Thao Lor, received a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in May 1998 and she has been employed by the Eau Claire Area School District.
Hobby: In Laos, Chao liked hunting and trapping wild animals. In the USA, he enjoys squirrel and deer hunting as well as raising and feeding farm animals.
Traditions/Cultures: Chao completed basic Mejkoob Class and has been Mejkoob (Hmong wedding negotiator) since 2000. He taught Mejkoob Classes from April 2014 to September 2014 and from September 2016 to November 2016. He also completed Taw Kev (Soul Guide) class in 1999 and Qeej Class in 2016. He attended Jeivah Family Kev Cai Dab Qhuas Classes from 2015 to 2017. He completed advanced Mejkoob Class and Feng Shui Class (Mem Toj Mem Av los yog Yaj Qua Tsev/Yeeb Qua Tsev) in May 2018.
